You may see that I have already published a blog back in early 2016 about the growing importance of having a SSL Certificate for your website. (see here if you’ve not read that post first)
Well, it just got even more important! And therefore warrants an update for 2017.
So what’s changed? Two main things really:
1- GOOGLE! Of course!
So back in 2014, Google announced that it was going to use having a SSL applied to a domain as a lightweight signal in its ranking criteria. You can read the announcement here .
However, it has now decided to back that up very visually if using Google Chrome as a web browser. Read their latest announcement here.
Basically they will be highlighting in the address bar those websites with and without a SSL as follows:
So this is a strong statement to get a SSL applied to a website to ensure your customers feel safe and secure.
2 – WORDPRESS
If you have a WordPress based website, they too have decided to lean towards promoting and supporting SSL certificates in a much stronger way than before. Read their announcement here. So they too are moving towards certain elements of WordPress only working with an SSL in place.
So time really is of the essence to get ahead of the game.
