A content management website, or CMS as it is known for short, is a website that allows a client access to their website and to be able to change text, images and pages without any technical knowledge.
Why should I have a CMS website?
These days, Google prioritises websites that update their content regularly and ranks them higher than competitors who don’t. So if you are able to have a Blog or add new pages on a regular basis, then Google will pay more attention to you. It also means you can keep customers up to date with business developments or new products or services.
How do I know which CMS system to use?
There are lots of different CMS systems available – WordPress, Drupal, Joomla, Expression Engine, CMSMadeSimple, Magento, ZenCart and OSCommerce to name but a few. Whenever you talk to a web designer and developer, they will have their favourite and so will want to work with that. It is not cost-effective for developers to learn every CMS software system as there are so many. I choose to specialise in two systems…Wordpress and CMSMadeSimple. They each have their own merits and when I meet to have an initial consultation with a new client, I will explain the advantages and disadvantages of each system and we will arrive at the best option for each business.
Most CMS systems use open-source software and so check if yours has regular upgrades and if your designer does this for you. If you use one that is created by an in-house team then it will make it harder to move/change your website in the future potentially.
What if I have a non-cms website already – can you turn it into a CMS website?
Yes I can. However, it will depend on how it has been built initially and some adjustments may need to be made to the code to keep it relevant with up-to-date standards and to make it cross browser compliant. But it might be that it is worth giving the website a re-design at the same time as this may be more cost effective in the long term. The visual life of a website is often gauged at approx 3 years.
So if you think you want a cms based website then do get in touch. I can provide a demo of the system and you receive full personal training at the end so you can maintain your website with ease.
